Margaret Habener, age 91, passed away March 1, 2013, with her son and his wife at her side in their home.

She was born in Stolp, Germany, on April 4, 1921.

She came to the United States of America with her parents in 1924.

She went to Girls Technical School in Milwaukee, Wis., where she studied cooking and to become a seamstress.

She married Herman Habener in 1941. They had two sons, Herman “Hank” Jr. and James.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; a son, Herman “Hank” Jr. of Crystal Falls, Mich.; two grandsons, Herman and Eric; a brother, Warner; a sister, Dorthy; and her parents.

She is survived by her son, James Habener, and daughter-in-law, Ellyn Habener; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She lived in Milwaukee, Wis., until 1966, when she and her husband moved to Conover permanently.

They enlarged their cabin on Stormy Lake (Lofty Pines) that they had built themselves in 1953. Her husband’s family has had a presence in the Conover area since the late 1920s.

She started work at Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River in 1984. She became children’s librarian in 1989. She enjoyed being with the children very much.

She was an excellent baker and seamstress. She had a great love for the Northwoods, the animals and birds. She was a great fisherlady.

She has had many exceptionally good friends from the area over the years who were extremely generous with their time and help for her.

She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Wisconsin Synod of Eagle River, Wis., and enjoyed her years in the choir.

There will be a memorial service at Christ Lutheran Church and interment in Hildegard Cemetery in Conover early this spring (date to be determined).

She was a kind, quiet, gentle lady who will be greatly missed by those who knew her. Lofty Pines will never be the same without her.

Condolences may be expressed at

Arrangements by Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home, Eagle River, Wis.
