By Ella Baltus
Reading is most often considered a hobby, but the Battle of the Books takes reading to a competitive level.
The purpose behind Battle of the Books is to promote a love of reading in high school and middle school students. Each team is given a list of 20 books which the team is responsible for reading. At the competition, competitors must recall each of the titles, authors, characters, plots, and settings from all stories. Participants are asked 20 questions for each of the 20 books.
The Northland Pines Battle of the Books team consisted of Faelanna Roelle, Jessica Sullivan, Brittany Pirus, Christina Angone, and Shauna Freund.
The team started reading in October, and each member was given a Kindle containing all of the books to use at their disposal.
The competition was held in February. Eighty teams entered the competition and Northland Pines came in 19th overall.
“It is a great thing to do with your friends and the mentors are super nice!” said team member, Jessica Sullivan.
Northland Pines hopes to come back even stronger next year and crack the top ten!
