Ice-covered lakes here not stocked for opener

Ice cover and poor road conditions meant that some lakes in northern Wisconsin were not stocked with catchable-size trout before the May 4 opening day of the inland fishing season.

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fisheries crews had hoped to have the stocking done in time for the opener, but continuing ice cover on the lakes and difficult conditions at the lake access delayed some stocking, according to David Giehtbrock, DNR statewide hatchery production manager.

“As soon as conditions allow, we will stock the remaining fish into these waters,” Giehtbrock
