Vilas County projects $1.7 million shortfall

Learning there was a projected $1.7 million budget deficit, the Vilas County Board supervisors last week gave a second round of suggestions to form the 2014 county budget.

According to information provided by Finance Manager Jason Hilger, Vilas County had a tax rate for county purposes at $1.92 per $1,000 of equalized value, which ranked it number 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties. Ozaukee County ranked lowest with a tax rate of $1.74. By comparison, Oneida County’s rate was $2 and Forest County was $4.77.
