Byford “By” Cavitt, a nine-year resident of St. Germain and formerly of Elgin, Ill., died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Grace Lodge Assisted Living in Rhinelander. He was 90.
Mr. Cavitt was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Marion, Ill., to Claude and Nettie (née Sutton) Cavitt.
He was a graduate of Elgin High School, and played minor league baseball as a young adult.He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a field lineman in the Asiatic Pacific region, including the Northern Solomon Islands and Southern Philippines.
Mr. Cavitt was a long-time member of the American Legion Post #57 in Elgin.
He met and married his wife, Nancy (née Stevens), in Elgin and worked as a maintenance engineer at Abbott Junior High School in Elgin for many years.
He retired from the U-46 Public School District in 1988.
His interests included being with family and friends, fishing, gardening and the Green Bay Packers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ammon and Bill; and three sisters, Halloween, Hilda Mae and Zora Lee.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Barbara (Hector) Feliciano of Genoa, Ill., Cheryl (Les) Siem of Eagle River, and Diane Schumacher of Hampshire, Ill.; one son, Thomas (Kathy) of Sun Prairie; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Interment at Whitney Cemetery in Wasco, Ill., will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Grace Lodge Walk to End Alzheimers or the American Cancer Society can be made.
