|Haack wins kayak from memorial race|
Jean Haack of Land O’ Lakes was the recipient of a new kayak, a Current Designs Breeze, valued at $1,000 from Jeff and Marcia Rohr of Conover.
Haack bought her ticket in Madison in March at Canoecopia when she visited the Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race booth.Other winners in the raffle were Derek Strohl of Port Washington who won an accommodations package from Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River, Cindy Pitzner of Fort Atkinson who won a week’s stay at Lake Forest Resort and Club in Eagle River, and Ramona Stoll of Rothschild who won an accommodations package from Black Bear Lodge in St. Germain.
Sixty-plus racers participated in the race this year with race record times being shattered.
The race accommodates all skill levels of paddlers. Participants may choose from the entire two-day race, a one-day or just the last three miles in the Paddle for a Cure race Sunday.
The event included food, music, refreshments, an auction and raffles.
The race also sponsored a summer-long raffle and a Berry Fest in August to raise funds.
The weekend events raised a total of $11,767, which brings the nine-year total to $113,644 supporting pediatric brain cancer research.
The money raised will benefit a research program at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago under the direction of Dr. Tadanori Tomita.
The Rohrs toured the research facility in December of 2012, meeting with Tomita and his research team. According to the Rohrs, they were impressed with the passionate work that is being done by this team, leaving no doubt they had made the right choice for the recipient of these funds.
The 2014 Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race will be June 14-15.
