Opening weekend buck kill drops 23% in three counties

The tri-county opening weekend buck kill plummeted 23% compared to the first two days of the 2012 gun deer season as extremely cold temperatures, wind and a later opener likely contributed to the low harvest, officials said Monday.

While the antlerless harvest dropped more than 40% in Oneida and Forest counties, it increased 125% in Vilas County. A majority of Vilas County was buck-only last season, but some antlerless permits were available in units 35, 36 and 38 this year.
