Phelps School hires three new teachers

The Phelps School Board recently hired Matt Meyer to teach math, English and information technologies; Kevin Grafwallner as high school social studies teacher; and Gregg Jennings as technical education teacher.

Meyer studied at Northern Michigan University and last year he taught at the Alternative High School for Marquette Area Public Schools in Marquette, Mich.

Previously he lived in Marquette for six years. This past summer he married Annemarie in Door County.

Club plans brat fry

The Phelps Snowmobile Club will sponsor a brat fry and bake sale at Trig’s in Eagle River Friday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The club will have homemade pies on hand. All proceeds go toward grooming trails.

Club members will be available to answer questions about the trails. For more information, call (715) 479-6869.

First place
Eugene McCaslin of Phelps recently won first place for his maple syrup at the Vilas County Fair. McCaslin has been making syrup for 10 years. “One of my favorite memories of my father was when I helped him make maple syrup on his property on Long Lake,” said McCaslin. Kolling joins school district as administrative assistant

The Phelps School Board recently hired Lynn Kolling as its administrative assistant. She is replacing Debbie Hill, who retired in June.

Kolling grew up in Greenville among dairy and crop farms, the youngest of four children. She attended grade school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Green­ville and graduated from Hortonville High School in 1994, playing basketball and softball all four years.

From 1994 to 2002, she worked with international imports

Senior bus trips slated

The Phelps Senior Citizens Club offers a ride on its bus for seniors 60 and older to the Land O’ Lakes Food Pantry every first and third Wednesday of each month and shopping in Eagle River every second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

To be picked up for either trip, call Jerry Gifford at (715) 891-1577.

On the second Monday of each month, a trip to shops in Rhinelander is available for those 60 and older.

Those interested in the Rhine­lander trip should call Jennie Johnson at (715) 891-1221.

Museum plans open house

Phelps Historical Museum will hold an open house Sunday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. Wine, cheese and beverages will be available at the museum.

A 50/50 raffle will be offered and donations to the building fund will be accepted.  At the downtown park area at 2 p.m., author Bill Jamerson will perform a reenactment of the logging days.

Lake group holds annual August Fest

The Lac Vieux Desert Lake Association recently sponsored its annual August Fest at Hillside Resort in Phelps, serving 298 people.

“All  club members jumped in to help from organizing, ordering, cooking, deep frying, serving and cleanup to make this August Fest the best on record,” said association President Robbie Anderson.

The crowd enjoyed an all-you-can-eat
