Little Mermaid
Students at Phelps High School recently put on a performance of “The Little Mermaid” for more than 250 attendees. The cast included Jackie Samuelson as Ariel, Michael Franzen as Prince Eric, Dylan Kleinke as Sebastian, C.J. Crawford as Ursula and Nathan Cirese as King Triton. Members of the choir also performed, along with students in fourth and fifth grades. All were under the direction of instructor Kim Johnson. The costumes and sets were designed by Mickey Santy. Hall of Fame induction set

The Rev. Gary Spurgeon and Maxine Drager will be inducted in the Fighting Knights Hall of Fame Saturday, May 24, at the Phelps High School graduation ceremony at 2 p.m.

An open house with refreshments honoring Spurgeon and Drager will be held in the Phelps School commons area after the graduation.

Historical museum to open May 30

The Phelps Historical museum will open for the season Memorial Day weekend and will be open Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

New displays have been arranged. The new hours of operation will be Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m.

Participants sought for rummage sale

Phelps Community Development is seeking participants for its annual community-wide rummage-a-rama slated for Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents of Phelps who have items to sell may participate by purchasing a spot on the official event map. The cost will be $10.

Donation to chamber

Golden Years Café to open at Northern Exposure May 19

Northern Exposure Bar & Restaurant in Phelps is now the new home of Golden Years Café, the Phelps senior dining site for people 60 and older.

The Vilas County Commission on Aging has announced it is partnering with Northern Exposure and its owner Doug Horstman to host the new meal site.

The site will serve meals  Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and is slated to open Monday, May 19.

The funding for the program comes from Title III Older

Kindle Fire HD raffle to raise flower money

The Phelps Community Development Committee is sponsoring a fundraiser raffle for a Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch model, and proceeds from the raffle will fund flowering plants in downtown Phelps.

Tickets cost $2 apiece or three for $5 and may be purchased at The Great Escape, Northern Exposure and Sand Lake Pub. Tickets also are available by calling Shelly Ray at (715) 545-2723 or Pauleyn Nystrom 545-3012.

The drawing will be held at The Great Escape Saturday, May 17, at 6 p.m.

The Kindle was donated by Frank and Joanie Barrett of Phelps.

Women’s club plans meeting

The Phelps Women’s Club will meet Monday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at the Phelps Fire Hall.

Meeting hostesses are Nancy Page and Kay Hickson. The speaker will be Debra Johnson, representing Sunshine for Humanity.

Items on the agenda include the flower boxes, the June dues-paying luncheon, the chicken dinner and basket raffle.
