Exotic animal program

Phelps School Board bids farewell to retiring members

The Phelps School District recently held a cake social honoring two retiring school board?members,?Randy Samuelson?and?Mark Grmick. The two seats will be filled by Kathy Mesun and Colleen Pietenpol.

Samuelson, who served on the board for 12 years, commended the Phelps community for its support over the past several referendums.

Logo contest offered for ice cream store

Barry and Wendy Mohr of the Phelps Convenience Center are sponsoring a logo contest for children 18 and younger.

In May, the Mohrs plan to open an ice cream store called Sweet Treats and More in downtown Phelps.

Their round cookie ice cream sandwich, I.C. Sammy needs an identity, and the Mohrs are seeking a logo of a round cookie ice cream sandwich with a mustache.

School to hold spring musical

Phelps School will perform its spring musical “The Little Mermaid” Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.

The event will be open to the public and  there will be no charge.

The cast includes members of the choir, as well as students in the fourth and fifth grades, under the direction of Kim Johnson.

Easter Egg Hunt set this Saturday

The annual Phelps Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Phelps School, and donations to support the event are being sought.

Organizers Rob Andersen III of Hillside Resort and Colin Crawford of Colin Crawford’s Guide Service said the event will be held for children through sixth grade, or 12 years old.

There will be a visit from the Easter Bunny, who will visit with children prior to the hunt. A hot dog and chip meal will be offered at no cost.

All children will receive a prize. Children should take along an Easter basket and a nonperishable item for the food pantry.

Ambulance donation
Organizers of the 2014 St. Germain Radar Races showed their appreciation to the Plum Lake Ambulance Service with a $5,500 donation April 2. Plum Lake Ambulance provided equipment and personnel for safety and rescue at the races. Crafts, demos, raffles featured at third Phelps Maple Syrup Tour

The Phelps community held its third annual Maple Syrup Tour Saturday, drawing more than 900 attendees.

Doors opened at 8 a.m. with a craft show and sale throughout the day, hands-on activities with the Northwoods Children’s Museum and food served at the Maple Café hosted by Sunrise Lodge.  A silent auction and 50/50 drawing were offered.

Other events included hands-on tree-tapping dem­on­strations and tastings of maple taffy on the snow.

Pietenpol, Mesun earn seats on school board

Colleen Pietenpol and Kathleen Mesun have earned seats on the Phelps School Board, as voters ousted incumbent member Mark Grmick last Tuesday.

Pietenpol garnered the most votes with 272, followed by Mesun with 265 and Grmick with 146.

The top two vote-earners won positions. Member Randy Samuelson filed for noncandidacy.
