Pietenpol, Mesun earn seats on school board

Colleen Pietenpol and Kathleen Mesun have earned seats on the Phelps School Board, as voters ousted incumbent member Mark Grmick last Tuesday.

Pietenpol garnered the most votes with 272, followed by Mesun with 265 and Grmick with 146.

The top two vote-earners won positions. Member Randy Samuelson filed for noncandidacy.

Easter Egg Hunt slated April 18

The Phelps Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Phelps School for children through sixth grade or up to 12 years old.

Rob Andersen III of Hillside Resort and Colin Crawford of Colin Crawford’s Guide Service are coordinating the event.

The Easter Bunny will visit with children prior to the hunt. A hot dog and chip meal will be offered at no cost. All children will receive a prize.

Children are asked to take an Easter basket and a non-perishable item for the food pantry.

Kimmerling, DuQuaine to serve on town board

Voters in Phelps Tuesday night elected Dorothy Kimmerling and Mike DuQuaine to seats on the Phelps Town Board.

DuQuaine had the most votes with 252, followed by the incumbent Kimmerling with 245.

Lorin Johnson and Cindy Regozzi lost the election with 158 votes and 53 votes, respectively.

Meanwhile, Chairman Colin Snook, Supervisor Steve Waier and Supervisor Wally Beversdorf were not up for elections this term.

Broadband issue nixed by voters

Phelps residents voted Tuesday night against a referendum asking to purchase or lease property for broadband expansion in the town.

The referendum was voted down 230 to 164.

The question posed on the ballot read: “Would you support using taxpayers’ dollars to purchase or lease property and equipment for the expansion of broadband throughout the town of Phelps?”

Women’s club plans meeting

The Phelps Women’s Club will meet Monday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at the Phelps Fire Hall.

Event hostesses will be Lola Sobiek, Jan Petrick and Carol Hockers. The women will share a visual presentation on the ice caves in Bayfield.

Solo and Ensemble
Due to inclement weather, Phelps High School students were unable to travel to Solo and Ensemble competition in White Lake in early March. A competition judge instead visited the school to adjudicate the students. Jackie Samuelson will go to State for trumpet and placed in Class A for vocals; Michael Franzen earned Class B for vocals and hand-chime choir; and Taylor Huza earned Class B for saxophone. Class C students included Austin Buell, saxophone; Alexis Sieg, clarinet; Teresa Kopanski, alto clarinet; Alexandria Myzska, trombone; Colyn Drenth, trombone; Brady Bierman, tuba; Richard Wilson, snare drum; and Jacob Johnson, French horn.  —Photo By Sharon Gifford

Women’s club seeking scholarship applications

Along with accepting applications from Phelps High School seniors, the Phelps Women’s Club recently extended its academic scholarship applications to include adult residents of Phelps interested in continuing education.

Applicants are required to have been Phelps residents for the last three years, or since 2010. Applications are available at the Eleanor Ellis Public Library during library hours.

Elections slated April 1 for Phelps Town Board

Voters in the town of Phelps will see an election for two supervisor seats on the Phelps Town Board next Tuesday, April 1.

Incumbent supervisors Dorothy Kimmerling and Lorin Johnson will run against challengers Mike Duquaine and Cindy Regozzi. The top two vote-earners will win a seat.

Meanwhile, Chairman Colin Snook, Supervisor Steve Waier and Supervisor Wally Beversdorf are not up for elections this term.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Phelps voters get chance to meet the candidates

Phelps Community Development recently hosted its Meet the Candidate forum at Phelps School, giving voters the opportunity to submit questions to candidates.

Candidates who attended the forum included for Phelps Town Board candidates incumbent Dorothy Kimmerling, Lorin Johnson and Michael Duquaine; Phelps School Board candidates incumbent Mark Grmick, Kathy Mesun and Colleen Pietenpol; and Vilas County Board candidates Ward 1 Steve Doyen and Jim Schweizer; and Ward 2 Wally Beversdorf.

Donations being sought for Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Phelps Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Phelps School, and donations to support the event are being sought.

Organizers Rob Andersen III of Hillside Resort and Colin Crawford of Colin Crawford’s Guide Service said the event will be held for children through sixth grade or 12 years old.

Andersen and Crawford are asking for monetary donations to purchase hot dogs and chips; items to fill the plastic eggs; the guessing jar; stuffed animals; and candy for the children.
