There are a handful of in-ground garden plots still available at The Land O’ Lakes Community Garden.

The garden is organic, fully fenced, sits in full sun and has a drip irrigation system. Plots are $35, and located behind the VFW on Highway B.

AARP Smart Driver class scheduled May 20

The Land O’ Lakes Public Library will host the AARP Smart Driver class Tuesday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This class is designed for drivers ages 50 and older, and covers changes made in modern automobiles, highways and changes that occur with drivers as they age.

Library participating in backpack program

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced that the Land O’ Lakes Public Library is one of 17 libraries in the state to participate in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Outdoor Explorer Backpack program.

“The Outdoor Explorer Backpack is an opportunity for families to go out and explore the outdoors in a new and exciting way,” Karen Weber-Mendham, Land O' Lakes Library.

Summer Launch set May 24-25

The Land O’ Lakes Chamber of Commerce announced the second annual Summer Launch will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25, in downtown Land O’ Lakes.

A corn toss competition sponsored by Headwaters State Bank will be held Saturday, May 24, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sign-up sheets for two person teams are available at the chamber, the Tackle Box, BP gas station, Land O’ Lakes Health Care Pharmacy and the Pine Cone Café.

The fee for registration is $20

Textbook-sculpture class slated in Land O’ Lakes

Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) announced its upcoming classes.

LOLA will offer a class on making sculptures out of recycled textbooks Thursday, May 8, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the LOLA Center for the Arts.

The class will be lead by Wendy Powalisz, program director for LOLA, and is designed for home-schooled youth, ages 7 to 17.

Soccer registration slated May 6 at elementary school

Headwaters Youth Soccer Association registration will be held Tuesday, May 6, from 3:15 to 6 p.m. at Land O’ Lakes Elementary School.

The recreational soccer league will be open to all children from the Conover and Land O’ Lakes area entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Home-schooled children also are welcome.

The soccer season will run from the first week of August through the first week of October.

Book club
Northern Footnotes Book Club members Lois Bates (right) and Chris Ebert (left) re-enacted the roles of British post-World War I investigator Maisie Dobbs and her wealthy sponsor, Lady Compton, from the book “Maisie Dobbs” by Jacqueline Winespear at a gathering of the club at the Land O’ Lakes Public Library April 8. Bates led a discussion on the expanding role of women at the beginning of the 20th century, and the historical and personal devastation wrought by World War I. The meeting also included discussion and high tea featuring homemade scones and a variety of teas served in china cups brought for the occasion by group member Cora Claypool. The next meeting of the book group will be Tuesday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the Forest Lake Country Store in Land O’ Lakes.
