Dr. Holinej joins NorthStar

The NorthStar Health System in Crystal Falls, Mich., announced the hiring of Dr. Sharisse Holinej.

Holinej provides care to children and adults, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion. She also has a special interest in sports medicine and women’s health.

Holinej earned her medical degree from Saint James School of Medicine in Bo­naire, Netherland Antilles, and completed her residency training at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Blood drive set April 22

A Conover Lions Community Blood Drive will be held Tuesday, April 22, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Conover Community Center on Highway K.

“If you haven’t donated blood in the past eight weeks, we’d love to see you on April 22 at the Conover Lions blood drive,” said Jan Hadsell of the Community Blood Center.

“Every day, patients in local hospitals like Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital re­ceive lifesaving blood transfusions. This blood comes from people who do­nate with the Communi­ty Blood Center,” added Hadsell.

Reading day
Students at Land O’ Lakes Elementary School and SOAR Charter School participated in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day as part of School Library Month. Teachers and students dropped what they were doing, got comfortable and read for 30 minutes. DEAR Day is held in honor of author Beverly Cleary’s birthday on April 12. Sno-Buddies raise $620

The Conover Sno-Buddies Snowmobile Club held its corned beef and cabbage dinner fundraiser at Club 45 Sports Bar and Grill in Conover March 17. The amount raised at the event was $620.

According to Club 45 owner Dave Payne, “Despite the bad weather that night, 62 people attended the dinner. We are happy to donate $620 to the snowmobile club, and thank all of the people that attended.”

This was the final fundraising event of the season for the club.

In celebration of youth art month in March, students from the Land O’ Lakes Elementary School and SOAR Charter School (School of Applied Research) were in­vited to the Land O’ Lakes Public Library for a artist-in-residence presentation, featuring local artist and Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Program Director Wendy Powa­lisz.

The event began with a presentation by staff from Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River, who helped students get their creativity flowing by asking them to think about things

Spring ballot to include clerk-treasurer office vote

The spring election ballot in Conover will contain a referendum question on whether the town should appoint a clerk-treasurer. James Hedberg, who was elected, currently holds this office.

According to Hedberg, a “yes” vote will allow the town board to advertise, interview and select a qualified applicant for the position based upon criteria that would be most advantageous to the position and to the property owners of the town.

Weight limits to be posted 24 hours before taking effect

According to Conover Clerk-Treasurer James Hedberg, the time and date that road weight limits take effect will be posted on the town website, conover.org, 24 hours before the limits go on.

At this time last year, seasonal weight restrictions were on the roads.

“With the weather this year, there is no telling as to exactly when the road weight limits will take effect,” said Hedberg.  “You can be assured it will be shortly, so now is the time to check your heating fuel supply.”

Art exhibit reception features student work

Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) and Artistree Gallery hosted the fifth annual youth art exhibit reception March 15. The theme for this year’s exhibit was “Art for All Seasons.”

More than 100 people, including  student artists, parents, friends, grandparents and gallery customers attended the afternoon reception.

Kids Fisheree
The Conover Lions Club recently held its Kids Fisheree on Denton Lake in Conover. According to Lions Club co-chairmen Ron Feckett and Lenny Johnson, 45 children and their families participated. The largest crappie was caught by 3-year-old Adrienne Trollan. Her fish measured 10 inches. Parker Trollan caught the largest bluegill measuring 73?4 inches. A 71?4-inch perch was caught by Dylan Keuffer. Adrienne Trollan’s catch was the largest overall fish and will be mounted courtesy of Lax Taxidermy. The event was hosted by Club 45 Sports Bar and Grill. Bait and predrilled holes were provided by Northern Waters Angling and Archery. Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) and Artistree Gallery will host the fifth annual youth art exhibit reception Saturday, March 15, from 1-4 p.m. at the LOLA Center for the Arts. This year’s theme is “Art for All Seasons.”

Approximately 100 pieces of artwork from Land O’ Lakes Elementary School students and area home-schooled students in grades kindergarten through fifth will be on display during the reception.

The exhibit continues Wednesdays through Saturdays,
