Our view

Property values on rise;
equalization a good thing

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue recently released the 2013 equalized property valuation figures to counties, municipalities, schools and the public, the purpose of which is to adjust values of various classes of property to match current market conditions.


The good news is that for the first time in six years, property values rose in Vilas and Oneida counties — evidence of economic improvement following a recession that began in late 2007.

United States not a nation of cowards

Letter to the Editor:

Shame on our nation’s Attorney General, Mr. Eric Holder, for not thinking through before making a blanket statement that our United States of America is a “nation of cowards.”

Robin Williams brought great happiness and laughter to many people around the world. His recent death by suicide was a shock to many individuals nationwide. Unfortunately, severe mental illness has taken another life.

There is a racism epidemic in America

Dear Editor:

To be clear, if it is true that a police officer shot an unarmed, cooperating individual with his hands in the air, as defenders of Michael Brown claim, then the police officer should be charged with murder and go to prison for life.

But based on forthcoming information, that does not appear to be true. I am not going to explore how he died, rather, go into what happened before and what we are now seeing in Ferguson.
