Vilas County voters deserve new ATV referendum

Letter to the Editor:

On Aug. 26, 2014, the Vilas County Board will vote on an ordinance that by law will officially open Vilas County roads and forest land to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) and repeal the 2004 binding resolution.

Many myths are circulating about the 2004 non-binding referendum that resulted in the 2004 binding resolution as well as the need for a new 2014 referendum to allow Vilas taxpayers a voice in their government.

Myth No. 1: The 2004 referendum “was the result of a two-year campaign

Businesses will follow tourists

Dear Editor:

In response to the letter last week that Eagle River needs a development plan — agreed!

Eagle River does need a plan, every town needs a plan. But let’s not think a few simple changes will make big improvements.

Eagle River was the premier destination because

There is plenty of space

Letter to the Editor:

Over the past few weeks, I have been reading the Letters to the Editor from those folks who are advocating a countywide referendum on the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) issue in Vilas County. It would seem to me that government works best when it works close to the issue.

What I mean by that is currently there are definitely local municipalities that strongly favor ATV routes and trails in their community. There are also definitely local municipalities that strongly oppose ATV routes and trails in their community.

Think about this for a moment. Does it really make sense for a municipality

The ERRA and its auction
need community support

If you get a chance this Friday and Saturday, it would pay dividends for the North Woods community and its youth to show some support of the 52nd anniversary Youth Days Auction, sponsored by the Eagle River Recreation Association (ERRA).

The auction is a place to find great deals on all kinds of new

Maybe city residents could stop ATV route

Dear Editor:

In light of the Vilas County Board disrespecting the wishes of the voters in regard to the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) issue, I discovered some interesting information in the Wisconsin statutes for the residents of the city of Eagle River.

Under the indirect initiative process available to residents of Wisconsin cities and villages, electors may propose, via petition, that the city common council or village board pass a desired ordinance or resolution without amendment.

In addition, s. 66.0101(6) permits electors

Vilas supervisors adopted binding ATV resolution in ’04

Letter to the Editor:

Mr. Dick Decker in his letter to the Vilas County News-Review Aug. 6, 2014, states, “When the Vilas County all-terrain vehicle resolution, 2004-25 is referenced, it is seldom defined as nonbinding or advisory only. Let’s tell it like it is because that is what it was.”

Mr. Decker is incorrect about the resolution. The 2004-25 resolution is indeed binding by unanimous

Democrats betrayed troops, war, nation

Dear Editor:

With unprecedented turmoil engulfing the Middle East which directly affects our national security, David Groh’s letter from July 23 echoed the polarizing sentiments of many Americans over the Bush administration’s decision to wage war against Iraq in 2003.

But is it true that Republican leaders were the sole “instigators” of the Iraq War and that their motives were never intended to be “for the good of this country,” as Mr. Groh?contemptuously claimed?

The political left still demonizes George W. Bush

Eagle River needs development plan

Dear Editor:

It is sad to see Eagle River lose more businesses and restaurants every year. I travel throughout the North Woods communities on business and Eagle River is definitely struggling the most economically. Minocqua and St. Germain seem to be doing better. A lot of Eagle River residents I know actually have to drive to Minocqua to work. Why is this?

I believe the reason Eagle River is falling behind is that over the years they have not had a good development plan for the community, and have slowly taken away the appeal to the tourists and in turn the businesses that would survive off of them.

In talking to people, it seems that a lot of them that

Addressing a few ATV ‘facts’

Letter to the Editor:

After reading the Aug. 6 letter from Dick Decker regarding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), we need to address a few of his “facts.”

First, the 2004 referendum is always considered an advisory vote. At that time, it was very clear that the majority of Vilas County voters did not want ATVs in Vilas County.

Second, 40-some years ago,

ATVs not safe on pavement

Dear Editor:

Being inherently lazy, I was thinking of recycling one of my past anti all-terrain vehicle (ATV) letters for print here, but I stumbled upon an interesting thing that happened in Iowa recently.

It seems a bill was introduced to both houses of the Iowa Legislature to allow ATV use on county lands and roads statewide. Sound familiar?

It passed the House but was rejected
