The Northland Pines football team got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but then rolled to a 37-0 victory over Wittenberg-Birnamwood in a nonconference game at Eagle River last Friday night.

The Eagles scored two touchdowns in each of the final three quarters and stopped several Chargers drivers early in the game to get the lopsided victory.

Eagles top T-Birds for first GNC win in boys soccer

The Northland Pines Eagles boys soccer team started the 2014 season on a positive note, beating Lakeland 3-1 in the first Great Northern Conference (GNC) game of the season.

Pines coach Andres Paez said a key to the game was the total ball control by Eagles’ center midfielders Connor Riley and Colton Raymond.

Jays football team beats Mellen 82-14

The Three Lakes High School eight-man football team defeated Mellen last Friday 82-14.

Jake Fath had 171 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the win. Gavin Maney had 115 yards and four touchdowns.

The third annual Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament saw 132 golfers compete in an 18-hole, four-person scramble at Eagle River Golf Course Saturday.

Twenty-eight non-golfers participated volunteering their time. The event was coordinated by Mike and Michele Vinovich of Eagle River.

Bluejays returning six to play soccer in 2014

The Three Lakes Bluejays boys soccer team will return six letterwinners to the field this season. Those players include seniors Gabe Edington and Hunter Mathison; juniors Will Starke, Ben Ribbe and Mitch Campbell; and sophomore Brandon Running.

Edington and Starke will lead the back four with strong outside support from Running, according to head coach Rob Ribbe.

Eagles JV football team tops Rhinelander 54-38

The Northland Pines junior varsity football team kicked off the 2014 season with a 54-38 victory against the Rhinelander Hodags last Thursday.

“The team should be commended for its spectacular performance in the first game of the year,” said coach Woody Ahlborn.

The coach said George Jackson and Ethan Polich, the team’s quarterbacks, took several hits while still completing passes, controlling deliveries to running backs and showing their own running abilities.

“Cameron Wait electrified the field with a total of five touchdowns. Cody Jantzen’s defensive?performance played an integral part in the game, causing the Hodags a loss of yardage. Zach Ciran’s two touchdowns sealed a victory for the Northland Pines Eagles,” said Ahlborn.

The Northland Pines volleyball team will have seven returning letterwinners when the Eagles take the court for the first game of the season this Thursday at Wausau East.

The Eagles, under the direction of second-year coach Julie Smith, will face East, Newman Catholic and Eau Claire North in a quadrangular starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles are coming off a 10-19 overall record in 2013,
