Pines boys hockey players compete in post-season events

Three senior from the 2013-’14 Northland Pines boys hockey team were chosen to represent Section 3 in the 32nd annual Wisconsin Senior Class Tournament in Waupun last weekend. Details are:

Pines defenseman Brandon Hunt had two assists in the tournament, while forward Zach Kennedy had one assist. Goalie Jacob Stephan had a .944 save percentage, a shut out and a penalty shot save. Stephan tied for second in overall standings of the 16 goalies that participated.

Banquet slated for pool league

The Eagle River Miller Beer of the Northwoods Thursday Night Pool League banquet will be held Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. at Uncle Kent’s.

There will be a pool tournament, food and prizes. All participants are welcome to attend.

Three Pines girls honored in GNC hoops

Three players from the Northland Pines girls basketball team were recognized on the 2013-’14 girls basketball all-conference teams.

Pines freshman Lexi Smith was named to the first team, senior Ashley Mai was named to the second team and senior Lauren Lenz received honorable mention.

Smith led the conference with 183 points in GNC game, averaging 15.3 a game. She also led the conference with a .745 free throw percentage. She was fifth in the league with 80 rebounds.

Mai was 10th in the conference in scoring with 122 points,

Siegmeier wins Big Ten title, then finishes13th at NCAA’s

After winning a 2014 Big Ten indoor championship in February, University of Minnesota senior Zach Siegmeier competed in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships in the pole vault in Albuquerque, N.M., last weekend.

Siegmeier, son of 1985 Northland Pines High School graduate Toby Siegmeier, cleared 5.26 meters (17-03.00 feet) to win the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championship in the pole vault  Feb. 28.

Event set for youth football

Northland Pines Youth Football & Cheerleading will hold its awards ceremony Sunday, March 23, at 4:30 p.m. in the commons area of Northland Pines High School.

Cake and beverages will be available as the program reviews accomplishments of the past season.

Joe Bucher of the Joe Bucher Blues Festival also will present a check to Northland Pines Youth Football & Cheerleading.

Youth softball sign up slated

A youth softball registration meeting will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 6:15 p.m., in the commons area of Northland Pines High School.

Those who have already signed up should still attend the meeting.

This is the only youth softball league in the Northland Pines School District.

Three Lakes girls fall to Goodman in WIAA Regional championship

After a first-round Regional win over Florence 52-38 last Tuesday and a win over Suring 53-46 in round two Thursday, the Three Lakes Lady Jays basketball team ended its season with a 51-39 Regional final loss to conference rival Goodman-Pembine Saturday.

The win over Florence marked the first playoff win for the Lady Jays in a number of years, according to coach Michele Brown.

“The girls were excited,” she said.

Falcons pick up pair of league victories

The Eagle River Falcons hosted the De Pere Deacons and the Fond du Lac Bears last weekend in Great Lakes Hockey League action.

The Falcons offense was clicking in both contests as they netted 18 total goals on the weekend, downing De Pere 9-4 Friday night and edging out Fond du Lac 9-8 in a thriller Saturday night in overtime.

The Bears earned one point in the standings for the tie in regulation and the home team two points for the overtime win.

The Northland Pines girls basketball team saw its season come to an end last Friday in the WIAA Division Regional semifinal game, as the second-seeded Eagles lost to third-seeded Peshtigo 57-47.

It was the first time in a number of years that a Pines girls basketball team hosted a second-round Regional tournament game. Peshtigo came into the game with an overall record of 20-2 and Pines sported an 18-4 overall record.
