Third annual snowshoe event to celebrate new Tara Lila trail

The third annual Snowshoe Celebration will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Tara Lila trail off Sundstein Road in Eagle River.

The event will honor the new Red Tara Trail south of Sundstein Road, the fifth snowshoe/hiking trail to be added on the property in the past three years.

Fishing tourney slated Saturday

The Phelps Lions Club recently announced that the dinner location has changed for its 28th annual Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournament, slated for this Saturday, Jan. 25, on Lac Vieux Desert.

The registration cost of $50 at the event includes an evening meal at the Derby Track Loft in Eagle?River. A cash bar will open at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30. Meal-only tickets will cost $15.

A briefing will begin at 8 a.m. at the west shore boat landing and the fishing will begin immediately after. The tournament is scheduled to end at 4 p.m.

There will be $100 awards

Fishing event set in Minocqua

The ninth annual Northwoods United Way Ice Fishing Jamboree will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, on Lake Minocqua at Stack’s Bay off Brunswick Road.

Registration costs $25 for adults and $5 for children and will take place on site at 7 a.m. followed by fishing from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest walleye, northern pike, bass, perch, bluegill and crappie.

There also will be a $1,500 prize for catching a marked fish.

Wisconsin residents and visitors alike can fish anywhere in Wisconsin without a fishing license this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18 and 19, during the second annual winter Free Fishing Weekend.

“It will be a great time to discover what ice fishing is all about — fun, friends, family and, of course, the fish,” said Theresa Stabo, Wisconsin’s angler education director.

Hunters kill 257 wolves

While Wisconsin wolf hunters reached the state goal of killing more than 250 wolves during the recent Wisconsin wolf hunting and trapping season, wolf hunters in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan fell short of their goal by 20 animals.

In Wisconsin, the 2013 season ended with a statewide kill of 257, six more than the 251-wolf quota the DNR set with input from University of Wisconsin biologists. The 2012 hunt ended with a kill of 117, one more than the quota.
