The Vilas County Public Health Department has requested assistance from the Wisconsin National Guard and will provide free drive-thru style COVID-19 swab testing in Vilas County Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the St. Germain Elementary School parking lot.

The testing will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (or while testing supplies last). The school is located at 8234 State Highway 70 in St. Germain.

This event is available to people who live or work in Wisconsin, according to Tammi Boers, assistant director/deputy health officer for Vilas County.

According to the Vilas County Public Health Department website, there have been 26 COVID-19-positive cases in Vilas County, including six new cases Monday. A total of 2,617 people have been tested, with 50 pending. In Oneida County, there have been 62 confirmed cases, 4,543 negative test cases and 103 pending tests.

Testing next Tuesday in St. Germain will be performed by the Wisconsin National Guard to those 5 years old and older who think they may have been exposed to COVID-19 or who are experiencing one or more symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, cough, loss of taste/smell, shortness of breath, or sore throat, according to Boers.

“Please note that anyone tested who has symptoms will be expected to self-isolate until test results come back. Testing is to determine current infection with COVID-19 and will not include antibody testing,” said Boers.

Preregistering for the event is encouraged as it provides shorter wait times and faster results for COVID-19 testing,

Preregistration information will be posted on the Vilas County Public Health Department website at health.vilascountywi.gov as soon as it provided.

Those unable to preregister should be prepared to provide their current address, or a local address where they are staying if different, including county of residence and phone number.

“We require masks or face coverings to be worn to testing. If test kits run out before the end of the event, those not tested may be turned away. Due to the unknown amount of interest, prepare for potential wait time,” said Boers. “There will be no restrooms available and those who want to be tested should stay in or on their mode of transportation at all times.”

The Wisconsin National Guard will be in uniform and wearing full personal protective equipment.

“The goals of this event are to provide the community with more testing, and to give Public Health a better understanding of how widespread COVID-19 is in our community,” said Boers.

The Vilas County Public Health Department is working with Vilas County Emergency Management and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department for this event.

Testing site information can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website at dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/community-testing.
