A ceremony to recognize two local recipients of the 2019 Wisconsin K-12 Forestry Education Program was held Monday at the Northland Pines school forest on Chain O’ Lakes Road in the town of Washington.

Steve Schmidt, outreach specialist for the program, presented recognition awards to Northland Pines District Administrator Scott Foster and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forester Jill Nemec, assigned to work in Vilas County.

Schmidt says these awards recognize individuals and organizations that provide leadership for local school forest programs and celebrate active school forest programs.

Students from the second grade at the Eagle River Elementary School, along with SOAR Middle School and SOAR High School students, attended to “learn hands on” various aspects of the school forest, including tree identification, a deer closure area and compass work.

The day’s program was organized by Land O’ Lakes Elementary/SOAR Middle School Principal Carie Brock.
