Eagle River Recreation Association (ERRA) board members were given some things to think about during their meeting held Nov. 16, including a monetary offer by Republic Services to hold naming rights to the famed Eagle River Ice Arena, commonly known as the Dome.

Jerry Burkett, a member of the Eagle River City Council, and chair of the Vilas County Board and local businessman, had asked to be on the agenda to make a presentation, which he started by addressing one of the major needs at the Dome.

“You need a new septic system. If you’re looking for the money to do that, and you come to terms at a bank, I will co-sign for the money,” Burkett said. “That way you can put a septic system in here and it will last forever.

“You don’t have to worry about the money. Put it on a five-year payment, make it affordable,” he added.

Burkett previously led an effort to raise money for the Save the Dome campaign that funded major improvements there.

“I was approached in my former capacity to apply for a grant for the hockey stadium with the aid of Tom Obrodovich,” said Burkett.

Obrodovich is a member of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame which is located inside the Dome.

The two men spoke with Jonathan Snyder, manager of Republic Services, a national waste disposal company that serves Wisconsin and 40 other states. They discussed Republic’s Community Grant Program.

“We applied to Republic and asked them for $500,000. If you’re going to ask, you might as well go big,” noted Burkett. “They asked that, if they gave $500,000, would it be possible for them to have ‘naming rights’ for 10 years and call it ‘The Republic Dome’.”

Burkett told Republic Services that he had “absolutely no ability to promise that, but I can ask, and I can certainly appeal to this board.”

“This is the first time anybody knows about this situation and Tom Obrodovich was a wonderful part of this,” Burkett added.

Because the presentation by Burkett was not an action item on the agenda, the ERRA board could not discuss it or put it to a vote. The next opportunity to do that would be at the board’s monthly meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Hall of Fame.

Also at that meeting, the ERRA Board of Directors will appoint someone to the open seat on the board. Interested persons can go to skate@erra.com to submit a letter of interest and intent.

The deadline to submit letters is Wednesday, Nov. 30.
