An Adaptive Water Ski Clinic will be presented by Graceful Wakes and Chain Skimmers Water Ski Show Team Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Pleasant, located at 5280 Highway 45 in Conover.

The clinic is open to adults and children with disabilities 6 years old and older. At the event, participants will use a specially designed adaptive water ski and have two trained side skiers next to them, so they can experience the thrill of waterskiing.

“After putting on a successful event in Eagle River last year, we’re thrilled to return,” said Grace Petzold, president and founder of Graceful Wakes Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. “I’ll be joined by several of my fellow teammates from the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team from Winter Haven. It’s going to be a great day with many of them returning to their old ski site at Lake Pleasant to put on a spectacular water ski show and to give back to the community at the adaptive water ski clinic.”

Petzold said she was looking forward to providing the opportunity for 25 local residents to get on the water and experience the pleasure of waterskiing.

“Skiers will use a specially designed ski to water ski. Additionally, participants will be able to tube and go for pontoon boat rides,” she added.

Following the clinic, Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team will then hold its benefit show July 12, at 6 p.m., also at Lake Pleasant.

Members of the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team all the way from Winter Haven, Fla., along with special guests from the Chain Skimmers Water Ski Show Team, will put on a one-hour show, open to the public.

Attendees will see the aquamaids performing ballet on the water, jumpers doing tricks, a kite soaring through the sky, human pyramids, and couples working together to perform stunts. The show also will feature former and current national barefoot water ski champions.

Admission cost is $7. All proceeds from this event will benefit Graceful Wakes. Concessions will be available for purchase.

“I’m excited to return to the Eagle River area to not only support the adaptive event being put on by Graceful Wakes and Chain Skimmers Water Ski Show Team, but also to ski before many family and friends,” said Mark Voisard, president of the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team. “I’ll be joined by fellow members of the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team including one of our very own members, Grace Petzold, who is the founder of Graceful Wakes.”

After skiing for several years as a member of the Chain Skimmers Water Ski Show Team, Voisard moved to Florida to ski at Cypress Gardens. In addition to being a former national champion skier, Voisard is an accomplished kite flyer. He will be putting on a kite demonstration at the water ski show.
