LDF Business Development Corp. and Vilas County Economic Development Corp. are cohosting a slate of economic development experts Thursday, Feb. 21, at Lake of the Torches Convention Center in Lac du Flambeau.

Experts will share with regional leaders, developers, business owners and entrepreneurs, and investment advisors the tax and development incentives within Opportunity Zones. Lac du Flambeau is an Opportunity Zone, with others designated across the region.

“Personally, I’m excited by the potential for local investors to invest in what they know. I believe the benefits of investing in a local Opportunity Zone go beyond tax savings,” said LDF Business Development Corporation CEO Darold Londo. “Area investors now can fuel the regional economy, creating jobs, revenue and a brighter future for the North Woods.

“There are numerous opportunities for multiunit housing and mixed-use developments to established businesses seeking to expand and start-ups seeking a home base,” Londo said.

The federal 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act established Opportunity Zones. The program is designed to drive long-term capital to rural and low-income urban communities throughout the nation. Capital gains tax incentives are used to encourage private investment in impact funds.

“And, no, you need not live in an Opportunity Zone to invest in one,” said Londo.

According to the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), Opportunity Zones are the largest federal economic development program in the last 15 years.

The Opportunity Zone Summit collaborators include LDF Business Development Corp., Vilas County Economic Development, Grow North, Oneida County Economic Development Corp., Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority and Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.
