Charles R. Gilman of Eagle River died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at Rennes Health and Rehab Center in Rhinelander. He was 82.

He was born Feb. 12, 1939, in Libertyville, Ill.

Mr. Gilman graduated from Ela Vernon High School in 1957 and attended Lake Forest College.

He married Kathy (née Selonke) Aug. 13, 1960. After Kathy died, he married Marilou (née Karst) Pooley June 14, 1986.

Mr. Gilman was an automobile mechanic most of his life. He was part owner of Eagle River Firestone for many years.

After retiring as a mechanic he worked at Eagle River Auto Parts for several years before becoming a driver for Schilleman Bus Co.

Serving his community was important to Mr. Gilman. He was a volunteer firefighter, chief of the fire department, and emergency medical technician in Half Day, Ill.

He continued community service in Eagle River by serving on the Northland Pines School Board from 1999-2005, sitting on the Tri-County Board for Social Services, serving as a member of the Republican party, and running for the 34th State Assembly District.

Mr. Gilman was an avid sports fan, competing as a three-season athlete in school. Later, he coached baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey, and after moving to the North Woods, he skated for the Eagle River Old-Timers League. He also was involved with the Eagle River Recreation Association (ERRA) coaching, volunteering, doing maintenance and changing sets for the Silver Blades Ice Show.

Mr. Gilman was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Arlene Gilman; and his first wife, Kathy.

He is survived by his wife, Marilou; one sister, Sharon Perryman; one daughter, Beth (Bruce) Jacobson; one son, John; two stepdaughters, Jennifer (Brian) DuFresne, and Jessica (Brady) Balls; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

As per Mr. Gilman’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ERRA Save the Dome campaign.
