George Michael Schell­gell, born April 24, 1930, in Passaic, N.J., passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2019, at the age of 89.

He graduated from Michigan State and spent the majority of his life in Milwaukee, Wis., where he owned Schellgell Food Service and several restaurants.

He was a member and past president of Bluemound Golf and Country Club, Western Racquet Club, University Club, Sea Pines Tennis Club and Nepeenauk Hunting Club.

George was a private pilot and loved flying, and had several different planes in his lifetime. In later years he flew with his best friend, Welles Murphey. They did volunteer work flying for “Angel Flights” to help transport medically challenged people as well as “Pilots for Paws” that was a dog rescue service.

His sports of choice were golf, tennis and skiing. He was a season ticket holder and cheered on the Wisconsin Badgers, the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks.

Before and since retiring and leaving Milwaukee he had spent his time between Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Watersmeet, Mich.

George and his wife, Jo­anne, owned a store, Simple Life, in Land O’ Lakes, Wis., for 21 years, where he loved to meet people and where everyone instantly became his friend.

He loved to travel, had a passion for gourmet cooking, his many dogs throughout his life, his family, and was so blessed to have many amazing special friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie (Breeman) Schellgell.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joanne (Baumgart) Schellgell; daughter, Suzy (Ellis) Rieke of West Bend, Wis., and son, Fritz (Susan) Schellgell of Mercer, Wis. Also, grandchildren, Anne Rieke and Fritz (Becky) Schellgell; his great-grandchildren; and his very special extended family.

George will be greatly missed by everyone and always remembered for being a kind, generous and loving gentleman.

There will be a Celebration of Life to be held at a future date.
