Gerald “Jerry” Niemisto Sr., a lifelong resident of Phelps, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Marshfield Medical Center. He was 71.

He was born May 8, 1949, in Phelps, to Jacob and Caroline Niemisto.

Mr. Niemisto graduated from Phelps High School.

He started his career in construction and later worked for the town of Phelps for more than 30 years, retiring as the foreman.

Mr. Niemisto enjoyed hunting, spending time by the lake and taking care of wildlife.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Land O’ Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kay; and his parents.

Mr. Niemisto is survived by two sons, Gerald Jr. (Becky Vandriel) of Appleton, and Paul (Rachel) of New London; his significant other, Sue Galek of Phelps; three brothers, Jack (Judy Wiita), Donald (Sue Peters) and Ernie (Linda); and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
