Richard David Mortell, age 94, of Stevens Point, Wis., died Saturday morning, Feb. 18, 2023, at Aspirus Hospital in Stevens Point.

He was born in Fond du Lac, Wis., the son of Dr. C.A. and Laura (Nolan) Mortell.

While working at Camp Tecumseh in Eagle River, Wis., he met his true love, Nancy Jean Travers. They were married the following summer and enjoyed 38 years together before she passed away in 1998.

Richard was a lifelong educator working in Marshfield, Kimberly, Eagle River, and McFarland, Wis., spending the majority of his career in the DC Everest School District. After retiring in 1988, he spent two years working as a school psychologist in Skagit Valley, Wash.

Richard served in the Korean War and loved sharing memories of the time his unit provided security escort for Marilyn Monroe when she performed for the troops. He was able to capture her on his movie camera blowing kisses at him and the other soldiers.

Richard enjoyed sharing stories about the four summers he spent working in a lumber camp in St. Maries, Idaho, for the Ohio Match Company.

His love of the outdoors and working with young people led to many years of work with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a founding leader for Troop 451 in Kronenwetter, Wis.

He is survived by his children, David (Mihoko) Mortell of Peachtree City, Ga., Mary Mortell-Ferrone (Raymond Cal) of Stevens Point, Michael (Teresa) Mortell of St. Francis, Wis., and Katie (John) Lehnen of Wind Lake, Wis.; and his grandchildren, Jack, Erin, Kou, Joseph, Matthew, Colleen, Grace, Molly, and Sean.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Wm. Patrick Mortell (Margaret), Tom Mortell (Adele), and Mary Dunphy (Paul).

Richard will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and sense of adventure. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the organizations of your choice that support children.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Richard will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River.
