Richard H. Compere, age 82, a resident of North Land O’ Lakes, Mich., died on Monday, April 12, 2021, at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Rhine­lander, Wis., after a 12-year battle with Parkinson’s disease with Lewy bodies. 

He was born in Highland Park, Ill., on Nov. 19, 1938, to Thomas and Elise Compere.  

Richard graduated from Highland Park High School where he played football.  He then attended Lawrence College in Appleton where he also played football. Richard graduated from Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., and also graduated from Northwestern University Law School with high honors and Order of the Coif. 

He married his wife, Ellen, on Aug. 19, 1962, in Highland Park. He practiced antitrust law at Sidley & Austin in Chicago, Ill., and then trademark law at Brinks, Gilson and Lione.  

Richard was very athletic. He enjoyed playing football, running 3 miles 

before work, racquetball, sailboat racing on Lake Michigan, biking 100-mile days, downhill and cross-country skiing. He also liked carpentry, his tractor and walking in the woods. 

Richard is survived by his wife, Ellen; sons, Ron Compere of Highland Park and Henry (Angela) Compere of Crystal Lake, Ill.; sister, Mary Collins of Santa Rosa Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Nate, Devin and Brooke. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas. 

A memorial service will be at noon on Sunday, April 18, at Kelley and Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Road, Highland Park, IL 60035. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Ascension St. Mary’s Palliative Care, 2251 North Shore Drive, Rhinelander, WI 54501 would be appreciated by the family.
