Robert I. Stern passed peacefully at home on Nov. 14, 2019, in Green Valley, Ariz.

He was born July 22, 1944, to Robert and Betty (née Marsh) Stern.

He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Ann Griffin, on June 27, 1964. They just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Robert attended Eagle River High School where he loved playing football and basketball.

After graduation in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He was proud to have crossed the equator and be a “Shellback.”

He returned to Sayner, Wis., where he was a salesman for Ahlborn Equipment and then retired after 20 years as a custodian with the Northland Pines School District.

He was a past member of the Sayner Lions Club, fire department and an EMT.

From a young age he loved hunting and fishing with family.

Robert and Sue Ann enjoyed their retirement RV’ing in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Amado, Ariz., before setting down roots in Green Valley.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Stern of Green Valley; sons, Jim (Cary) Stern of Wausau, Wis., and Todd Stern of Sayner; daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Brown of Sayner and Rebecca Hall of Wichita, Kan.; and niece, Michelle Stern; grandchildren, Jennifer TurĀ­ner, Samantha Turner, Tara Jane Stern, Stephanie Filicetti, Lucas Hall, Jacob Hall and Amanda Hall; and great-grandchildren, Ayden and Logan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Betty Stern; brother, Ed Stern; sister, Jean Stern; and daughter-in-law, Tracy Rager-Stern.
