Roy DeFreece Jr., a resident of Phelps since 1995 and formerly of Oak Brook Terrace, Ill., died Wednesday Sept. 18, 2019, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 88.

He was born July 19, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., to Roy and Bessie DeFreece Sr.

Mr. DeFreece married Betty on May 30, 1953, in Cicero, Ill.

He worked at the Vilas County News-Review and the Vilas County Commission on Aging.

Mr. DeFreece enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and bowling on leagues. 

He was a member of the Land O’ Lakes Bible Church and Lions Club International in Eagle River.

Mr. DeFreece was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters, Helen and Marge; and one sister-in-law, Lorayne.

He is survived by one daughter, Vicki (Paul) Hartung of Willowbrook, Ill.; one son, Roy III (Kathy) of St. Charles, Ill.; one brother, Ralph (Anne) of Carol Stream, Ill.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Downers Grove, Ill.
