Ruth I. Kliss, age 97, of Woodruff/Sugar Camp, Wis., died on March 4, 2020, at Country Terrace in Rhinelander, Wis.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1922, in Sugar Camp, the daughter of Thomas and Agnes (Nitzel) King.

She attended schools in Sugar Camp and Rhinelander, graduating from Rhinelander High School in 1942.

Ruth moved to the Detroit area right after high school and aided in the war effort as one of “Rosie the Riveters.” She worked specifically on the “Hell Cat” airplanes.

At the end of the war she returned to the Sugar Camp area and married William Kliss on May 18, 1946. God blessed them with 53 years of marriage before Bill preceded her in death on the Fourth of July in 1999.

After their marriage Ruth and Bill lived on the farm in Sugar Camp where they raised their six children. When the younger kids got a little older Ruth went back to work at the Coca-Cola plant in Rhinelander. She was employed there until her retirement in 1982.

Ruth was a lifelong member of St. Kunegunda Catholic Church and was a longtime member of the Ladies Altar Society.

In her spare time she enjoyed picking wild berries, gardening and tending to her flowers.

She enjoyed the winter in the Northwoods and loved to take the kids ice fishing whenever she could.

She was proud of her hometown and country and was very patriotic.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Doloris (Thomas) Onson and Katherine Rodemeier; her sons, William (Phyllis), Greg (Diane), Lionel (Gail) and Michael (Lori); her 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Eileen Hintz; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Romona Kunda-Baroka; and her brother, Leon King.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 7, 2020, at St. Kunegunda Catholic Church. Father Bala Reddy Allam officiated. Interment followed in the St. Kunegunda Catholic Cemetery.

A memorial is being established in Ruth’s name and may be directed to her family.
