Dear Editor:

I am adding to the “Quick history lesson on American leaders” Letter to the Editor by James Lynn in the Sept. 8 Vilas County News-Review. Mr. Lynn seemed to forget or overlook some very important people.

The first on my list is Franklin Roosevelt, who took office in 1933, the year I was born. President Roosevelt, a Democrat, got us out of the Great Depression, so great it affected our whole country and caused many suicides. Roosevelt also got us Social Security, which is very important for many people, me being one of them.

Then, came Harry Truman, who got us out of the war with Japan so we wouldn’t be run by that country at that time. Truman was a Democrat.

Then, came Dwight Eisenhower, who was mentioned in your history already so we’ll go to John F. Kennedy, who was a Democrat and got Russia out of Cuba. Remember the Bay of Pigs? Then, after Kennedy was shot in Texas, who got us that “awful” Medicare which the rich people don’t like because they don’t want the poor and middle class to have free access to medical care?

Then, we can’t forget Richard Nixon, a Republican. I really can’t say much about him because I don’t like to speak ill of the dead because they can’t defend themselves.

Then, there was Ronald Reagan, who was a Democrat until he met Nancy, whose family was Republican and rich. Reagan raised taxes more than any other president.

Then, came George H.W. Bush, a Republican — “read my lips, no new taxes” — who raised taxes and also had Desert Storm to deal with.

Then, came the Clintons. Democrats and a lot of scandals which people loved, but when he left office, we were debt free and our country’s finances were in good shape.

Then, came the young Bush, a Republican, who wasn’t elected by the people, but who was handed the “president” title by his Republican cronies on the U.S. Supreme Court. He got us into another war and a Depression, which was handed to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, Democrats who got us out of the Great Recession and gave us the Affordable Care Act.

Next, came the hate-monger we have now. If you liked Adolf Hitler, you will like Donald Trump. The Nazis were drawn to Hitler as the white supremacists are drawn to Trump. It’s like the good minister said in a recent article in Time magazine “If you vote for Trump, you are voting for Satan.”
