Moe recklessly compared Trump to Hitler
Public discourse can only benefit society when it is grounded in reality.
In his Letter to the Editor March 29, “Trump using Hitler’s playbook,” Terrance Moe cobbled together a tyrannical Hitler/Donald Trump parallel based on the information incorporated in his warning, which confidently asserted “Unfortunately, Trump’s recent executive order, Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) is a page taken directly from Hitler’s playbook.
“Through VOICE, Trump, with his entourage of white supremacists, is developing a file of all criminal activities by Muslims in the United States with the obvious intent of encouraging racial profiling by law enforcement and inciting fear, hatred and paranoia in the American populace.”
However, except for the meaning behind the acronym VOICE, none of the governmental particulars in Moe’s warning are real.
Factually speaking, VOICE is a new federal office created by the Department of Homeland Security in accordance with one of several mandates contained in Executive Order No. 13768, issued Jan. 25. VOICE’s mission is to work with victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens (undocumented immigrants) primarily stemming from past and ongoing security issues along our southern border with Mexico. The office was introduced to the American people in Trump’s televised joint address to Congress Feb. 28.
This executive order “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” in part establishes an “Office for Victims of Crimes Committed by Removable Aliens,” by stating “The Secretary of Homeland Security shall direct the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to take all appropriate and lawful action to establish within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement an office to provide proactive, timely, adequate and professional services to victims of crimes committed by removable aliens and the family members of such victims.”
Additionally, this executive order singles out said crimes committed in sanctuary cities that by design “willfully violate federal law in an attempt to shield aliens from removal from the United States.”
Section 9(b) explains “To better inform the public regarding the public safety threats associated with sanctuary jurisdictions, and, on a weekly basis, make public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignored or otherwise failed to honor any detainers with respect to such aliens.”
But by employing fake facts, Moe recklessly advanced a diabolical narrative comparing Trump and Muslims to Hitler and Jews, by concluding “While this does not equate to genocide, it does parallel Hitler’s early campaign, before implementation of ‘the final solution’ (extermination of the Jews).” Indeed we are living in dangerous times.
