Ann Mayo, age 103, a lifelong resident of Eagle River, Wis., died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Rennes Health and Rehab in Rhinelander, Wis.

Mayo was born in Chicago, Ill., and her parents moved to Eagle River when she was 2.

She lived on her family’s farm on Deerskin Road in the town of Washington until she was 98. At that time, she moved to Rennes Health and Rehab Center in Rhinelander.

Mayo spoke on her secrets to long life, “Spend time outdoors, stay active and eat a well-balanced diet, which occasionally includes a pinch of blackberry brandy in Sprite.”

Until the age of 83, Mayo enjoyed cross-country skiing and several successful deer hunting seasons, during which she shot some trophy bucks.

She was an avid fisherwoman, especially enjoying trout fishing on the Deerskin River where she used worms for bait.

She loved to garden, spending numerous hours in her huge vegetable and flower gardens until her early 90s.  She also loved sharing the fruits of her labor with her many neighbors and friends.

Mayo attended Normal School in Rhinelander for one year and received her Bachelors of Science degree in education from UW-Stevens Point in 1964.

She began her teaching career in the one-room Boot Lake School outside Eagle River, for a salary of $25 a month.  Because she took care of the wood stove and carried in the water for the school, her salary was increased to $30 a month.

Mayo then taught at the two-room Mayo School in the town of Washington for eight years until she quit to raise a family with her husband, Walter Mayo, on her family’s farm.

Twelve years later she returned to teaching at Eagle River Elementary School, from which she retired at age 65.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Elizabeth (née Ankstikalnis) Fedorovich; husband, Walter, in 1998; son, Tom; brother, Adolph.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Andrew) Schaffer of Eagle River, Judy Boda of Wittenburg, Wis.; and son, Donald Mayo of Eagle River; grandchildren, Kris (Dave) Gruna of Hatley, Wis., Sara (Joe) Robinson of Shoreview, Minn., Drew Schaffer of Dillon, Colo., and Kendra (Paul) Vayssiere of Oregon, Wis.; grandchildren, Devin and Rileigh Gruna, Harper and Reagan Robinson; numerous other family and friends.

Private family services will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations to WEOM Library foundation Building Project are appreciated by the family.
