As part of the Northwoods Blizzard Blast, the second annual Blizzard Splash will take place in Phelps on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Great Escape Bar and Restaurant.

In addition to a Firehouse and Community Chili Cook-off, hot chocolate bar, firefighters’ auction and memorial lanterns over the lake, Blizzard Splash will feature a unique competition between local firefighters.

The Bob-off competition pits firefighter against firefighter, challenging each to see who can remain in the cold waters of North Twin Lake the longest. Participants will wear the department’s cold-water rescue gear, affectionately known as gumby suits, which will help protect them from the chilly water.

Competitors will collect pledges for every 15 minutes that they remain in the lake. These funds, and proceeds from the event, will go to support local volunteer fire and emergency medical service departments. Fire departments throughout the area are invited to enter into the Firehouse Chili Cook-off and Bob-off.

The competitor who remains in the water the longest will receive a trophy and a $25 Phelps Chamber Bucks certificate. To make a pledge, call the Phelps Chamber at (715) 545-3800.

Competitors will take the plunge at 11:30 a.m. Judging for the chili cook-off begins at 2 p.m.
