The annual Northwoods Baseball Classic will take place in Three Lakes, Friday through Sunday, June 21-23.

The tourney will feature four age divisions competing for team championships in 10-, 12-, 13- and 14-and-under divisions.

Three Lakes youth baseball spokesman Tyler Lorenz said the goal for the tournament is to flourish over the coming years into one of the bigger and best-run youth baseball tournaments in northern Wisconsin.

“This year’s tournament is set to host 34 teams,” said Lorenz. “With four different age groups attending our tournament this year we are projecting to have anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 people in the area for our event.”

The tournament acts as a major fundraiser for Three Lakes area youth sports, and event coordinator Jason Stebbeds said every dollar raised will be used to improve the playing fields used by youth baseball and softball teams at Don Burnside Recreational Park.

“Each year we have continued to grow and grow, and with the amount of support and organization we are able to put 100% of our profits back into Don Burnside Park,” said Stebbeds. “The goal of the tournament is to continue to raise funds and work toward having one of the nicest baseball and softball facilities in northern Wisconsin.”

Lorenz said the community and visitors to the North Woods are invited to enjoy games that will be played on area diamonds both Saturday and Sunday. In all, the popularity of the event and the strengthening of the baseball community locally drives its success.

“Baseball is continuing to grow in Three Lakes and the Northwoods Baseball Classic is a prime example of that,” said Lorenz.

Stebbeds agrees, saying the event will boost tourism in the area and highlight the community and its growing commitment to building a strong baseball program.

“Three Lakes, at one point, was a baseball town,” said Stebbeds. “Somewhere that was lost but the efforts of a few dedicated people has started to bring the buzz back to this community.”

A gun raffle, 50/50 cash raffles and concessions throughout the weekend will all help raise funds for area youth teams.
