The Eagle River Falcons hockey team had a tough weekend on the road as they dropped a pair of one-goal games inside the Great Lakes Hockey League.
Starting Friday on the ice in Mosinee, the rivalry between the Falcons and Papermakers kept itself in good form as a late one-goal lead evaporated for Eagle River across a span of less than one minute.
Mosinee grabbed an early lead just 48 seconds into the game, only to watch Dustin Madlung return the scoring favor with 17:11 to go in the first period to tie the score at 1-1.
The Papermakers then grabbed a lead once more with 11:22 to play on a Christian Tomski goal. Lucas Otto matched that with 3:25 to play in the period on assists from Alex Kornely and Dylan Weber which made it 2-2 to end the first.
Eagle River grabbed a 3-2 lead in the second as Otto connected again, this time in short-handed fashion on an assist from Alex Hauswirth.
Things stayed that way until late in the third when with less than a minute to go Mosinee pulled their goalie in an attempt to tie the game, and did more than that as an Omar Mullan shot-and-score tied it with 54 seconds to play.
With just nine seconds to go the Papermakers would get the game-winner, again off the stick of Mullan as he lifted his second goal within the final 45 seconds to send his team to a 4-3 win.
The Falcons were shorthanded with just 13 skaters making the trek south. Mosinee outshot the Eagle River squad by a 48 to 32 margin.
The following night the Falcons moved toward the opposite direction as they headed north to the Calumet Coliseum in Houghton where they suffered their first overtime loss of the season in another 4-3 affair.
The Falcons once more had a light crew with just 10 skaters plus Michael Madosh in goal making the trip. It didn’t stop the Falcons from pushing ahead in the first as two goals from Jake Robinson and one more from Otto helped the road team build a 3-1 lead.
That unfortunately was all the offense the Falcons could muster as Calumet’s Jim Brey scored a pair of second-period goals to knot the game at 3-3, and after a scoreless third period the Falcons fell victim to a Brendan Jacques score with 57 seconds left to play in overtime which was the deciding factor.
Shots on the night between the two teams were split even at 38 apiece.
The loss dropped the Falcons record to 3-4-1-1 and keeps them in seventh place in the league standings with eight points, tied with Fond du Lac who will come to town Friday evening for a matchup at the Eagle River Sports Arena.
The annual USA Pond Hockey weekend always means a packed house inside the Dome. The team will return for a Saturday game as they will face Marquette.
Both games are set for 8 p.m. starts.
