The Three Lakes-Phelps boys and girls cross-country runners took part in the annual Ted Voigt Invitational, hosted by Lakeland Union High School last Thursday on the trail system at Minocqua Winter Park.

“Winter Park proved to be a tough course for the runners as they were challenged to a lengthy uphill climb early in the race,” said coach Laurie Levandoski. “The course, portions of which are run on the ski hill, included sandy and rocky terrains.”

Teams taking part in the race were  Lakeland, Northland Pines, Medford, Florence, Rhinelander, Hurley and Three Lakes.

On the girls side it was Kallie Volk and Sophie Nafziger who were able to medal; Volk crossed the line with a time of 22:44 which was good for fifth place overall in the girls varsity race.

Nafziger, whom Levandoski said continues to show vast improvements for a young runner, crossed in sixth place with a time of 22:50.

Margaret Mouw ran a solid race according to her coach, and was 52nd with a time of 27:31.

The girls race was won by sophomore Meredith Richter from Medford in a time of 20:51.

On the boys side Eli Nafziger and Connor Hanneman pushed themselves hard during the race but the difficulty of the course may have gotten the best of them early in the season, Levandoski said.

Hanneman finished in 25:00, good for 36th place, followed by Nafziger, who was 37th in 25:36.  The race was won by Joe Sullivan, a senior from Medford, who easily dominated the course with a time of 16:53.

Rhinelander continued to impress so far this season as they took the team title from Medford, beating the Raiders by five with a low total of 36.

Following Medford (41) in third place was Lakeland (71). Northland Pines was fourth with 80 points followed by Hurley with 127.

On the girls side it was Medford taking first place, nearly sweeping the top five with a low team total of 20 points. That was easily ahead of second-place Lakeland (48), Rhinelander (76), Northland Pines (112) and Hurley (122).

The varsity runners will wrap up their week with the 65th annual Bill Smiley Invitational this Saturday, hosted by Wausau East.
