Ken and Ellyn Dahnke, well known around the St. Germain community, were nominated to be the Independence Day Parade Grand Marshals because of their notable service and volunteerism.

The town’s Independence Day Committee received the nomination from Laura Locher and Kelly McGill who also belong to the Sayner-St. Germain Fish and Wildlife Club with the Dahnkes. McGill’s nomination letter read in part, “I have worked with both Ken and Ellyn since we moved here, and they never say no to helping.

“I love their positive, can-do attitude, and how much they love St. Germain.”

The Dahnkes are active in their church, the St. Germain Community United Church of Christ, the Lions and Lioness clubs, and spend much of their days working at the St. Germain Thrift Shop sponsored by their church.

“It’s great to feel that you might be doing something for others as well as having a great time for yourself,” said Ken.

The Dahnkes said that they feel that the people of the town whom they have grown to know and appreciate give them a great sense of belonging and a warm sense of kinship.

Ellyn is also active in the St. Germain Women’s Service Club where she has served as vice president and on many fundraising event committees.

Ellyn, born in Elgin, Ill., and Ken, born in Milwaukee, built their home in St. Germain and relocated for their busy life of service in 2009.

Ken ran his family business, H.W. Dahnke Sales Company, for 49 years. The business represented manufacturers of material handling equipment on the worldwide stage. Ellyn was by his side in the business for more than 28 years while they resided in Oconomowoc before retiring to St. Germain.

The town’s Fourth of July parade will be held Sunday, June 30, at 3 p.m., starting at the south end of town in the vicinity of Thunderbird Bar and Grill and traveling north to the Community Park.

The park will be busy all day beginning with the Freedom 5K Run, Lions Unique Raffle, a craft and vendor fair, live music by Bret and Fisk, a bounce house, fire department water fights, food and beverages throughout the day, and fireworks at dark.
