Eagle River Union Airport will host its annual fly-in Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Father’s Day weekend.

The Props & Pistons Fly-In and Speed Run will feature airplane exhibits, a radar run on the runway for all vehicles and a classic auto show.

The kickoff to the day will be the Fly-In Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Troop 601 will cook and serve an all-you-can-eat meal of pancakes and sausage.

The Civil Air Patrol will sponsor a burger and brat cookout from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. alongside the American Legion corn roast. There also will be a beer tent available.

The fly-in itself is informal, offering close-up views of the aircraft. Attendees don’t have to fly to take part; they may walk or drive in according to airport manager Rob Hom. There also will be radio-controlled models on display all day. 

“We are bringing back the car show!” said Hom. The show will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A registration fee of $10 enters participants into a 50-50 drawing which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Winners must be present to win. No judging will take place at this show. Car show participants may test their speed for $15 for one run in the afternoon session.

The popular Model A Club slow race will begin at 10 a.m. The first set of speed runs takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the runway.

“We’ll have another two-hour set of racing starting at 1:30 p.m., a total of four hours for street-legal vehicles to test their top speed in timed one-quarter mile runs on the runway,” said Hom. “Our timing system will give each driver a reaction time off the start, elapsed time and top speed.”

A $25 registration fee will include two runs, with additional runs costing $10 each. Street legal and modified cars, trucks and motorcycles will be able to attempt the speed record.

All drivers must wear helmets as minimum safety gear. Those driving cars and trucks will be required to wear a seat belt, while full leather riding or safety suits will be required for motorcyclists.

Registration is recommended and can be arranged by calling Hom at (715) 479-7442. The event is limited to 60 participants. Day-of registration is on a first-come, first-served basis as space allows.

“We will have aircraft on display, along with remote-controlled models, raffles, flybys and good food,” said Hom.
