CONOVER — The Northwoods Blizzard Blast Event Committee has announced the event schedule for the upcoming winter festival to be held this Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Conover Community Park.
All proceeds from the event benefit North Woods area fire and emergency medical services (EMS) departments. Billed as “Winter Fun for Everyone,” activities on the park grounds kick off at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. There is no admission fee to the park.
All events are free for spectators to enjoy. Single-event tickets will be available for purchase for those who want to get in on the action. Recliner Races, Ice Bowling and Slap Shot Hockey events along with open skating will be held on the ice rink in the center of the park.
Hot laps happen throughout the day while Recliner Race Finals happen at 2:30 p.m. to see who takes home the coveted snowflake trophy and $100 prize. Prizes are also awarded for Slap Shot successes and strikes in Ice Bowling.
The adjacent baseball diamond will be home to the Firefighter Challenge Competition, Dogsled Dash and the popular Candy Flurry that happens when fire engine sirens sound off. Giant Ski Races cross the outfield while teams of four challenge one another to ski together in sync and stay upright on one pair of 18-foot-long custom-made skis.
On the south end of the park, Chilly Charlie’s Children’s Carnival area features winter-themed games with prizes awarded. Children may try their luck at Snowman Pong, Ring Toss, Find my Buttons, Pin the Nose on the Snowman and Chilly Charlie’s Challenge. Children will also enjoy Snow Art Fun, using nature’s own materials to create colorful art in the snow.
Event participants will find open sledding on the popular sledding hill along with pony rides and demonstrations in archery and snowshoeing nearby. Loading near the Park Pavilion, horse-drawn sleigh rides depart the park every 15 minutes and travel through scenic forest lands.
The large raffle tent near the center of the park will host basket and ticket raffles as well as silent auction items. Additional raffle games will be held near the snow bar.
The Northwoods Blizzard Blast Artisan Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Conover Community Center adjacent to the park. Hand-crafted alpaca knit items, seasonal crafts and nature-inspired jewelry will be showcased.
Patrons are welcome to try tasty samplings of artisan breads, dips, cheeses and wine and take home their favorites. Face Painting will also be available at the Artisan Bazaar. Sandwiches, s’mores, snacks, and refreshments are available all day. Warming bonfires and heated restrooms are located throughout the park.
The Conover Community Park is located one-half mile east of Highway 45 on Highway K.
