The Three Lakes-Phelps boys soccer team will open its 2021 postseason at home next week after getting the No. 4 seed in WIAA Division 4 Sectional. The Bluejays will host the fifth-seeded Chippewa Falls McDonnell-Eau Claire Regis co-op.

The Bluejays have been playing some of their best soccer of the season over the course of the last two weeks, and though they dropped a non-conference test to rival Northland Pines 4-2 this past week, they handled Wausau Newman Catholic, 7-0, and then defeated Northland Lutheran, 8-1.

“Against Newman I felt we played a complete match on both sides of the pitch,” said head coach Jack Wales. “We were crisp and fluid, and concentrated on playing the short pass.”

Wales said that paid dividends as it created numerous scoring opportunities for the Bluejays front line.

Toby Volkmann led the way with three goals on the day, with an assist, followed by two goals apiece from teammates Cole Melton and Trevin Walkowski.

Just days later in a lopsided win against Northland Lutheran, Wales said it was much of the same for his team.

“It was another complete match for us,” said  Wales. “Our defense kept their offense in check all game with their lone score coming when the outcome was already decided.”

The Bluejays got goals from a host of players in the win as Volkmann had two to go with two assists. He was followed by a goal each from Melton and Walkowski, along with Sawyer Siedschlag, Austin Adams and Sam Eppler.

“The last two matches we have had numerous players hit the score column,” said Wales.  “If we can continue this will make it really

hard in the playoffs to defend us.”

Three Lakes-Phelps will have their hands full should they be able to get a win in their tournament opener as they’ll likely face Northern Lights Conference rival Washburn-Bayfield, who got the top seed overall and will face the winner of No. 8 seeded Barron and No. 9 seeded Northland Lutheran. That game would be for the Regional championship and be played at the site of the higher seed.
