The goal of Feed Our Rural Kids (FORK) is to help feed hungry children from food-insecure homes within the Northland Pines School District, according to FORK President Perry Pokrandt.

“So we invite everyone to consider helping FORK to provide one of our local kids one extra meal today,” said Pokrandt.

“To do this, we are excited to introduce our Feed A Kid Today fundraising program at feedourruralkids.org,” he said.

Dan Biehoff, FORK treasurer, said FORK is designed to help just one child one meal at a time.

“That is how we will define success and everyone can help us get there one meal at a time,” said Biehoff.

Feeding America, a U.S.-based nonprofit network of more than 200 food banks, has determined through county-by-county research that the average cost of a meal in Vilas County is $3.55. This amount is 28% higher than the average cost of the same meal within the entire state of Wisconsin.

“This cost factor alone puts higher levels of stress on families trying to make ends meet, often leaving kids to pay the price,” said Biehoff.

To date, FORK has raised funds that will provide children from food-insecure homes an additional 1,100 meals.

“That’s just the start,” said Biehoff. “The need is much, much larger so our goals are much, much larger.”

Pokrandt said FORK is committed to helping children one meal at a time.

“So we are asking members of our community and others who love it Up North to visit our website in order to ‘Feed A Kid Today’,” he said.

The FORK website, feedourruralkids.org, allows individuals to donate via debit or credit card or PayPal®. Donors can select the number of meals they wish to donate and the donation total is calculated for the donor. Also, checks can be mailed to Feed Our Rural Kids Inc., 4887 Echo Ridge Drive, Eagle River, WI 54521.

“The Feed A Kid Today program will be a constant part of our annual fundraising efforts. We wanted to make this ask of support extremely straightforward and simple so that donors can see themselves providing a child that one extra meal,” said Biehoff.
