The all-ages Don Gillum Memorial Bike and Hike is coming up this Saturday, July 20, on the Conover-Phelps Trail.

The family event features options of a trail ride of 10 or more miles or hiking part of the trail. Individual participants or teams also can take on a scavenger hunt or a geocaching challenge which can earn them more tickets for the day’s bucket raffles. Prizes include youth bikes, hiking poles, overnight stays at area resorts and more.

People can also come just to enjoy the lunch, music and raffle for $15 per person. Adult registration for the whole event is $40 each, or a family fee of $110 is available which covers two adults and two children.

The event is held to showcase the Conover-Phelps Trail and to celebrate the memory of Don Gillum, a well-known Vilas County resident and volunteer bike trail developer. Proceeds benefit the Conover-Phelps Trail and Relay For Life of the Northwoods.

The event begins and ends in Conover’s Community Park. Walk-in registration begins at 8 a.m. and the opening ceremony is at 8:45 a.m.

Following the ride, everyone will meet back at the park for music and a lunch of brisket, smoked chicken wings and boiled red potatoes provided by Wild Turkey, and ice cream from the Boathouse Grill & Creamery, both in Conover. Hot dogs will also be available.

The Car Shop in Eagle River is underwriting the cost of soft drinks. Live music will be provided by MeMo, a popular local duo.

Drawings for a hybrid adult’s bike and all the bucket raffles will be held at 12:30 p.m., with tickets for the hybrid bike and the bucket raffles available for purchase during the event right up until the time of the drawings.
