Communities and organizations throughout the North Woods are planning ice fishing jamborees this winter.

Most of the ice fishing derbies are family-oriented events, offering prizes for the largest fish as well as door prizes. Participants should call organizers at the number provided to confirm dates and locations.

The following is a rundown of the ice fishing jamborees in this area:

Jan. 18, Boulder Junction — The sixth annual Wittig’s Point Tavern “Big Fish” Ice Fishing Tournament on Fish Trap Lake, with 100% payout for three biggest bluegills, walleyes and northerns. Fishing will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Headquarters is Wittig’s Point Resort and Tavern. Phone (715) 892-1544.

Jan. 18, Presque Isle — The Icehole of the North Fishing Tourney will be on Presque Isle Lake from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with prizes for largest game fish and panfish. Headquarters is the Retreat Bar. Phone (715) 686-2575.

Feb. 1, Boulder Junction — The Frozen Tozen Ice Fishing Tournament will be held at the Boulder Lake boat landing from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be cash prizes, raffle drawings, food and refreshments. Proceeds benefit the boat landing improvement fund. Phone (715) 385-2400.

Feb. 8, Sayner — The Sayner-Star Lake Lions Club will host the annual Plum Lake Ice Fishing Tournament on Plum Lake from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration at the boat landing on the south side of the lake. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m. at the Sayner Community Building. Phone (715) 542-3501.

Feb. 8, Phelps — The 19th annual Northern Exposure Ice Fishing Tournament will be held on North and South Twin lakes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., sponsored by Northern Exposure Bar and Restaurant. Phone (715) 545-3555.

Feb. 15, Phelps — The Sand Lake Pub Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Big Sand Lake from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., headquartered at Sand Lake Pub. Prizes will be awarded after fishing. Phone (715) 545-3200.
