Last week, Alejandro Retana-Echeverria, 31, was struck by a vehicle off Highway 51 in Arbor Vitae and pronounced dead by emergency responders upon arrival to the scene.

According to Lt. Mike Aderman with the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, on June 16, at approximately 12:46 a.m., the sheriff’s office received a 911 call that reported a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on Highway 51, north of Highway 70 South.

Through investigation it was determined the vehicle operator, Laurie Wildcat of Lac du Flambeau, was allegedly operating under the influence and subsequently arrested and booked into the Vilas County Jail. Wildcat was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, according to Chief Deputy Patrick Schmidt of the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office.

Wildcat was scheduled to appear for her initial bond appearance in Vilas County Circuit Court June 17.

The Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Vilas County Medical Examiners Office, Minocqua Police Department, Woodruff Police Department, Howard Young Med 5 Ambulance, and Arbor Vitae Fire and Rescue all responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation by the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Wisconsin State Patrol for reconstruction purposes.
