Remembering the men and women who died in military action for their country will take on a new look during Memorial Day services in communities across the North Woods this year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While area organizations usually hold public gathering ceremonies, many veterans are older and more susceptible to the COVID-19 disease, so protecting them as well as the public is a top priority for communities planning these programs.

In response to the virus, organizers have made difficult decisions to cancel all or part of the normal services held. Below is a listing of those holding services, and the modifications they are putting in place.

Eagle River

The annual Eagle River Memorial Day ceremony that is usually held at Veterans Monument in front of the Vilas County Courthouse has been canceled this year.

The Vilas County Veterans Service Office is urging the public to remember to be grateful for the heroes who served but never returned home.

“Memorial Day is a day of solemn remembrance of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” said Brian Thomas, Veterans Service officer. “Please find time in your day to observe a moment of silence to honor our fallen.”

The Veterans Service Office remains open to support veterans and their families. Current appointments are by phone only. Staff continues to serve and to provide information, answer questions, and process paperwork needed for benefits.
