The Northland Pines boys soccer team won a pair of games last week, edging Washburn-Bayfield 3-2 in a nonconference contest and shutting out Antigo 6-0 in a Great Northern Conference (GNC) game.

Against Washburn-Bayfield last Tuesday, all three Northland Pines goals came in the second half.  Washburn-Bayfield  scored in the first half and then went up 2-0 at the 48-minute mark in the second half with a penalty kick.

The Eagles’ first goal finally came at the 59-minute mark with a great shot from sophomore Owen Uebe on an assist from Liam Oas.

“Owen has done a great job this year and I’m really proud of him for scoring his first goal in a Pines uniform.  He has a great shot,” said Pines coach Mark Pinski.

The Eagles’ second goal came at 69 minutes from Sam Gremban, assisted by Brady Snedden. The third goal, and the game-winner, was scored with 5 minutes left by Oas, assisted by Snedden.

Pines played without senior centerback Brett Wilkins again due to an injury and had to move some other players around to get some more scoring.

“Moving Brady up to striker and Liam back into the midfield really sparked things and started some scoring,” said Pinski. “I’m really proud of the boys for not giving up and knowing that they could come back to win this game.  It’s not the first time they’ve done that this year and it shows how confident they are in their ability as a team to pull out wins.  To come from two goals down on the road and get a win was really impressive.”

Five different Northland Pines players scored in the 6-0 win over Antigo last Thursday.

The scorers included: Snedden; Bjorn Luebke, two  on headers assisted by Mason Hogenmiller; Zach Maillette, assisted by Liam Oas; Liam Oas; and Hogenmiller, assisted by Sam Gremban.

“I was very happy with the way we played during the game at Antigo.  We were able to play several guys and rotate guys around to different positions,” said Pinski. “I was really proud of Jason Ritter and Jesse Ebert for getting some really good varsity minutes and playing real strong.”

Pines, 4-0-2 in the GNC and 8-2-2 overall, was scheduled to play at Lakeland on Tuesday of this week and will travel to Medford this Thursday, Oct. 10. Both are GNC games started at 7 p.m. Lakeland is 2-3-2 in conference play and Medford is 5-1-1.

The Eagles will then host a quad this Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 10 a.m. Teams include Pines, Kingsford, Mich., McDonell Central and Washburn-Bayfield.
