Northland Pines junior Jacqueline Smith was named the Great Northern Conference (GNC) Player of the Year for the 2018 volleyball season.

Smith was a unanimous selection to the first team. Northland Pines senior Lauren Grosskopf was named to the second team and Pines senior Cameron Ramesh received honorable mention.

Smith led the conference with 274 kills in 42 sets, averaging 6.5 kills per game. She also was first in attack percentage at 40.4% and first in service aces with 43. She was third in the conference in digs with 186, or 4.4 per game. She also was fifth in blocks with 32.

Grosskopf, a setter for the Eagles, was first in the conference with 353 assists or 8.2 per game. She was also ninth in the GNC in serving percentage, and had just six errors in 118 serves, good for 94.9%.

Ramesh was ninth in the conference with 144 digs, averaging 3.4 per game, and ninth in aces with 20.

Smith, Grosskopf and Ramesh helped lead the Eagles to a 6-6 record in the GNC, good for fourth place behind Mosinee at 12-0, Medford at 9-3 and Antigo at 8-4. Behind Pines were Tomahawk at 5-7, Lakeland at 2-10 and Rhinelander at 0-12. The Eagles, coached by Julie 

Smith, finished the season 21-15 overall.

Joining Smith on the first team were seniors Janae Antosch and Hanna Nest, and junior Paige Wicklund, all of Mosinee; senior Ashlyn Nedden and junior Emma Jaje (libero), both of Antigo; and junior Kamry Albrecht of Medford.

Other second team selections were senior Elyse Incha of Antigo; seniors Desirea Weissmiller and Bailey Klabunde, both of Medford; senior Taylor Shilts and junior Mady Hanse, both of Tomahawk; and senior Allison Miller (libero) of Mosinee.

Other players receiving honorable mention included senior Amaya McCann and sophomore Clare Aulik, both of Antigo; senior Melissa Bruckner and junior Abby Parris, both of Lakeland; seniors McKenzie Waldhart and Megan Graff, both of Medford; senior Sydni Gburek and junior Aurora Krause, both of Mosinee; and senior McKensie Waldhart (libero) of Medford.

Coach Justin Jacobs of Mosinee was named the GNC Coach of the Year. He led the Indians to the conference title, Regional and Sectional championships, and appearance in the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament, losing 3-0 in the Division 2 semifinals to East Troy 25-21, 25-13 and 26-24.
