A 29-year-old Three Lakes man, charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and three other charges, entered not guilty pleas to all charges at a plea hearing in Oneida County Circuit Court last Monday,

April 19.

Samuel A. Steinhaus allegedly backed over his 59-year-old father, George E. Steinhaus, also of Three Lakes, while they were attempting to free the son’s vehicle from a ditch on Highway X in Three Lakes Feb. 12.

Steinhaus also is charged with knowingly operating while revoked (causing death), a felony; third-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI), a misdemeanor; and ignition interlock device tampering, a misdemeanor.

Oneida County District Attorney Michael Schiek added two additional charges April 19 after receiving results of a blood draw from Steinhaus the night of the accident. The amended charges include homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration (second-plus offense) and operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration (third-offense).

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on Highway X near the intersection with Medicine Lake Lodge Road after the younger Steinhaus apparently slid off the road into the ditch. The incident was reported to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department at 9:27 p.m.

According to the complaint, Steinhaus and hi brother, Eric, and their father were at the scene of the incident.

At the preliminary hearing, an officer said his investigation showed Eric was attempting to pull Samuel’s truck from the ditch when it gained traction. The vehicle driven by Samuel over-accelerated backwards, striking his father before hitting the back of the truck driven by Eric.

A pretrial in the district attorney’s office was scheduled for June 15. Steinhaus is free on a $2,500 cash bond. Two traffic citations are tracking with the case.
