A 59-year-old Three Lakes man died last Friday night while he apparently attempted to help his son’s vehicle from the ditch along Highway X in the town of Three Lakes, according to authorities.

George E. Steinhaus was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Three Lakes Police Chief Scott Lea.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 9:27 p.m. Friday reporting a pedestrian was backed over by a truck that was in the ditch along Highway X near the intersection with Medicine Lake Lodge.

The Three Lakes Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Three Lakes Fire Department and Oneida County Ambulance responded to the scene.

Lea said the preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle, driven by Samuel E. Steinhaus, 29, of Three Lakes, was traveling northbound on Highway X and went into the southbound ditch. In the process of attempting to pull that vehicle from the ditch, George E. Steinhaus was struck by the vehicle as it exited the ditch, according to Lea.

Samuel E. Steinhaus was arrested and faces possible charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, third-offense operating while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while revoked and failure to install ignition interlock device, according to Lea. Those charge recommendations have been forwarded to the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office, according to Lea. Steinhaus was expected to make an initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Monday afternoon.

The crash remains under investigation by the Three Lakes Police Department and the Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office.
